New Chitose Airport

Ferry (ship):
Otaru has one of the great deep water ports in Japan, one of only three ports in Japan that can dock a U.S. Aircraft carrier. For an inexpensive and memorable trip to the main island of Honshu, ferries run daily during most of the year from Otaru to Maizuru (north of Kyoto), to Tsuruga, and to Niigata. Ferries also run from Tomakomai, near New Chitose Airport to Hachinohe, Sendai, and Oharai (north east of Tokyo).

Rail:
Japan’s passenger rail service is widely considered to be the best in the world. Frequent local and express trains run punctually between Otaru and New Chitose Airport. Otaru is located 31 minutes by express train from Sapporo, and 72 minutes from New Chitose International Airport. Skiers can reach Niseko ski area from Otaru in about 90 minutes. For the more adventurous traveler, Japan Railways runs overnight sleeper trains to Tokyo and Osaka through the world’s longest undersea tunnel, the Seikan Tunnel connecting Hokkaido to Honshu.

Hokkaido Railway (JR Hokkaido)

Bus:
Hokkaido’s largest bus company, Chuo bus is headquartered in Otaru. The Otaru train station serves as a major terminus for both local and long distance bus routes.
