Why We Chose Otaru University of Commerce?

Otaru University of Commerce was founded in 1911 when Otaru (map) was thriving as a business and financial center of Hokkaido to develop the last frontier remaining in Japan. During the early years of the 20th century, the city of Otaru (detailed map) was an influential world leading port for the trade of important commodities and a center of banking and commerce in northern Japan.

Beginning from the early stage of its history, the university has been well-known as a center of economics and business. Otaru University of Commerce has always been known to welcome foreign faculty and students. Professors from Europe taught here prior to the Second World War. OUC is also known as the alma mater of famous Japanese authors such as Kobayashi Takiji, Ito Sei, and others. A recent business magazine reported that Otaru University of Commerce is ranked among the top 5 Japanese Universities in terms of the ratio of successful company executives as a percentage of graduates.

Voice of students – Here is what some of the past graduates of the YOUC Program have to say.

Learning about Japanese culture and economics for my future career

I am thrilled to be in Japan, as I have always been quite interested in Japanese culture. I am enjoying my life here with my Japanese classmates. Although they were very shy in the beginning, you don't need much time to learn how kind and likable they are. One advantage of studying at OUC is that I can establish warm and friendly communication with the teachers, because of the relatively small-sized classes. When I return Spain, I would like to become a teacher or to work in a company dealing with Japan while I continue to experience more of Japanese culture.

Study and play well

Since I'm studying at Department of Japanese Language, one-year stay in Japan is obligatory. I chose Otaru University of Commerce because I thought I could study both Japanese language and marketing. I'm living in the International House with international students from various countries and I found no difficulty in finding new friends and enjoy exciting life. The great advantage of this university is that you can study subjects related to Japan in English. I found no inconvenience in study and everyday life.

Having become aware of the importance of team work under OUC's international environment

The reason I came to Otaru is that I was interested in Japanese culture, particularly Japanese movies and Buddhism. I believe that Otaru is a beautiful city. Since I came to Otaru, I have become aware of the importance of team work and of following the manners of a different culture. In particular, Shodai (Otaru University of Commerce nickname) has many international students, and I have a chance to participate in team activities with them. This has become a really fruitful experience in my life, and I will be able to take the advantage of this experience when I work in a multinational company in the future.

Great opportunity to meet many Japanese people

I started to get interested in Japan when I had a chance to study Japanese language in high school. As I studied Japanese on my own after high school, the idea of coming to Japan to study started to come to my mind. Then in university I fortunately became good friends with many students from Japan, and that made me decide to come to Japan. I chose Otaru University of Commerce because I had a good friend of mine here. I like Japanese people and the way of thinking Japanese people hold of their work, so I intend to come back to Japan after I get qualified as a French teacher.
